Here’s the letter Pete Hoekstra shared with his supporters titled “2012 U.S. Senate Announcement”:
After serious consideration and many discussions with friends and supporters, Diane and I have made the decision that I will not be a candidate for the United States Senate in 2012. This was an extremely difficult decision for us to make as we saw strong points both for and against running. However, in our final analysis, we agreed that it was not in the best interest of our family at this time to enter the race.
We share the beliefs of many people across Michigan that we need new conservative representation in the U.S. Senate. With the continued economic uncertainty, frustrating high unemployment, and staggering deficits resulting from the economic policies of President Obama and Senator Stabenow, America needs a new direction. Additionally, the President’s and Senator’s incoherent foreign policy throughout the Middle East and in the War on Terror continues to put our nation at great risk. It is time for change.
We are excited by the agenda of fiscal restraint and economic freedom that is gaining a foothold in Washington and recognize that it needs to be broadened and extended in 2012. Electing a new senator from Michigan is a key component of that agenda. While we have decided as a family to not enter this race, we are confident that the Republican candidate for Senate can win in November 2012.
Please know that while we are not running, we will remain an integral part of the efforts to bring our shared values back to Washington. We look forward to working together in new ways as we fight for an agenda that embraces individual freedom and opportunity and reduces the invasive nature of the federal government. This election needs to be about the future and the policy issues that are critical to ensuring that our children and grandchildren have the same opportunities that we had.
Diane and I are sincerely grateful for all of you who expressed your opinions and offered your prayer support as we contemplated our opportunities. The people of Michigan are absolutely awesome. We would specifically like to thank Governor Snyder and all of our local and state elected officials for their leadership to the State of Michigan. The road ahead is not easy, but together we will make a difference.
