Do you know the guy? Peter Martin Hoekstra, born in Assen. Blond guy, very long legs, always tripping over himself. But that didn’t stop him from playing in five international matches for the Dutch national team and for the likes of professional football clubs PSV Eindhoven, Amsterdam Ajax, Compostela, Groningen, and Stoke City. Currently, Peter Hoekstra coaches Groningen’s junior football team.
*Our* Peter Hoekstra does not appear to subscribe to the neoconservative Bush doctrine of “bomb them into democracy”. According to the congressman’s spokesman, this is why the football coach sold the PeteHoekstra.com domain name to progressive Americans — who have dedicated the website to “Pete Hoekstra: Dangerous, Polarizing, & Bad for Michigan…One of Congress’ more offensive buffoons…Ugly American”.
But, you ask, is Peter Hoekstra (R-MI) really as bad as all that? Born in 1953 in Groningen, his family emigrated to the US when he was three years old, and he grew up as “Pete” in — where else? — Holland, Michigan. In 1992, he succeeded Guy van der Jagt as his district’s Congressional representative, conducting his campaign tour on a bicycle like some kind of pocket-sized Abel Tasman. The bicycling struck a chord in the district, which contains the highest number of Dutch-Americans in the US. So can we Dutch be proud of “Pete” Hoekstra?
Well, to be honest, not so much. He’s even more right-wing than Geert Wilders and Hendrik Koekoek put together — just like a lot of Americans with Dutch roots. A Bush disciple to the bitter end, Pete is still a great supporter of the attack on Iraq, to this day claiming that there were actually weapons of mass destruction there. He’s also in favor of bombing Iran and locking up suspects without due process and torturing them. A bad, bad guy.
